Understanding Aquaculture

In general when it comes to aquaculture, this is primarily the practice of rearing animals and breeding plants in such controlled aquatic environments like in oceans and the other manmade or artificial settings like ponds and tanks.  Indeed there are a number of purposes that the practice of aquaculture serves and some of these are such as the fact that it helps in the restoration of endangered species, food production, building of aquariums plus a number of other environmental benefits that actually come along with the practice.  The following is a look at some of the types of aquaculture and just how they prove to be of importance.

Mariculture is one of the kinds of aquaculture and this is that practice of aquaculture that involves the use of marine water.  Mariculture can be practiced next to the ocean where there will be a sectioned off part of the ocean or in some other cases it is in a pond separate from the ocean but that has sea water all the same.  You can have aquatic species of various kinds bred in these ponds such as bounce mushroom, molluscs, sea foods such as prawns and shellfish and the other sea plants such as seaweed.  The economic benefits of breeding such plants and animals is seen in the fact that there will be a lot of applications that these plants will have in the manufacturing field.  Take for instance into consideration the fact that the collagen that is collected from the seaweed is used in the cosmetic and beauty products manufacture for the making of facial creams and the molluscs get us pearls that are designed into fashion items.

One of the forms of aquaculture that is quite common is that of fish farming.  Talking of fish farming as a form of aquaculture, this is generally the practice of selective breeding of fish, either in fresh or sea water with the main objective of getting an alternative food source.  The fact that fish farming happens to get such a sure alternative source of cheap protein, it has so proved to be so popular.

The other type of the practice of aquaculture is that known as integrated multitrophic aquaculture, also known as IMTA.  This is the practice of aquaculture that sees the mix of the different trophic levels in the system so as to ensure that there is provided enough in the nutrients that will be sufficient for the species in the environment.  It is seen as an efficient system in the sense of the fact that it is an attempt to provide the same ecological system that is found in the natural habitat.
